London Heathrow, 10:00am Saturday 5th April 2008
Well, here I am. All checked in. Flying to Chicago. Thence to Omaha. Driving to Le Mars. That's the plan.
When I've explained this trip to people, they've fallen into two roughly equal groups: those who are wide-eyed and more-or-less admit they think it's mad; and those who express great jealousy and wish they were coming too.
My friends are moving from Iowa to Alaska, to become year-round staff on a Christian Camp, two hours outside Anchorage. While the children will fly there with their mother, their father elected to drive, with all their possessions in a trailer. So I volunteered to join him on the trip. So this is holiday for me (?!), but real life, and the beginning of a new life, for them.
I'm aiming to blog along the journey. I don't know if that will work: it depends on the availability of wireless at miscellaneous Canadian motels, I suspect. As they say, watch this space.

Well, I fall squarely in the "Jealous" camp. I think it's a wonderful thing to do and wish I was on the road too.
Hi Marty. I hope I can keep the updates coming. And the album too. It should get really scenic from here on in.
